Lucas Museum Design Contest

The City of Chicago was recently presented with an exciting opportunity to potentially become the home of the George Lucas Museum.  With the recent rejection of a site in San Francisco, and Lucas taking up a second residence in Chicago with his new wife Mellody Hobson, he released an RFP for the city to host a potential site for the filmmaker’s collection of art and movie memorabilia.  Chicago may actually end up having two major landmarks come into the city – the Barack Obama Presidential Library and the Lucas Museum. VIATechnik is putting its resources toward making the Second City a prime landmark destination. Here’s how:

VIATechnik is sponsoring a very unique, once in a lifetime, museum design competition.  VIATechnik’s CEO, Danielle Dy Buncio explained what a great honor it is to host this unofficial contest where aspiring designers and architects can showcase their talents and passion for the Star Wars Franchise and it’s maker George Lucas, all while helping Chicago become a destination for the Lucas Cultural Museum.  George Lucas envisions an iconic museum in a 1st class city.  Dy Buncio explains that she hopes the winning submission showcases an iconic design while being mindful of (and taking advantage of) Chicago’s landscape, robust architectural history, and four seasons.

Please note that this contest is not sponsored by George Lucas, the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum, Lucasfilm, or the City of Chicago.  Winning entries will be shared with the City of Chicago’s  Selection Task Force, but it does not guarantee in any way that any of the designs will be used by the Task Force.

Contest Closes June 15, 2014, so get started now!

London Organic Skyscraper

This international competition calls on and challenges participants to design or present a fresh concept for an Organic Skyscraper – a skyscraper that grows or changes form according to future requirement.

The skyscraper will serve as a tech city (technology and digital media centered companies) within the area. The design proposal should be one with topology that allows for the possibility to grow as the need for more space becomes necessary in the future to counter today’s ever-increasing number of city commercial skyscrapers which are under utilised, sparsely occupied or even with empty floors. This has on some occasion been due to the trend for commissioning and constructing too many unnecessarily high skyscrapers resulting in low-density use or occupancy in major cities.

The design should be visually and aesthetically engaging, explore and investigate the possibilities for urban Skyscrapers that present the unique possibility to increase useable space vertically and horizontally as the need arises or even to shrink where there is space or height surplus to requirement. It should also maximise the positive impact of such a Vertical Structures whist minimising the negative.

Beyond Environment Exhibition Installation

Call For Proposals: Beyond Environment Installation LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions) 6522 Hollywood Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90028
The curators for the exhibition Beyond Environment, to be held in September and October 2014, are hosting a competition to design and build three pavilions at the LACE gallery. Beyond Environment explores the potent interchange between architecture, Land Art, and Performance Art that emerged through Italian architect Gianni Pettena’s collaboration with American artists Allan Kaprow and Robert Smithson in the 1970s. Captivated by a journey to the USA in 1971, Pettena’s About Non Conscious Architecture series would converse with the American Midwest, a conversation culminating in his meeting with Robert Smithson in Salt Lake City. Earlier, while in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Pettena’s experiments in material transformations helped create some of architect’s most iconic works. Staged in Minneapolis in an abandoned school and in a non-descriptive suburban house, and titled Ice House I and II, Pettena would pour water into the mold works he created around the buildings’ perimeter walls. Curing during the winter night to a coat of ice, the houses resonated with their conceptual predecessor, Kaprow’s Fluids of 1967, as well as with a newer contemporary architectural sensibly concerned with the effects of variedly compounded, highly eidetic architectural surfaces.
Curated by Emanuele Piccardo and Amit Wolf, in collaboration with the Graham Foundation, Beyond Environment combines approximately thirty works by Pettena, Kaprow, Smithson, as well as from Pettena’s Florentine milieu, that of Superarchitecture and the Italian “Radical” groups UFO, Superstudio, and 9999.
Competitors are asked to reconsider this architecture-art complex using contemporary technologies and materials. An exhibition of selected proposals will be hosted concurrently at the WUHO Gallery. Program Requirements: Design three pavilions that will act as media rooms, each approximately 10’ x 10’ x 10’. Important aspects of the design are therefore the control of light/visual/sound elements, and the further manipulation of the pavilions’ envelope to accommodate seating and display. competition packet for existing gallery layout (plan and section) as well as dates for site visits will be sent to participants following registration. The winning designer(s) will be presented with a budget of $4000.
Submission Requirements and Process:
There will be a preliminary round of judging, from which a short-list of three candidates will emerge. The final judging will be held on 30, May, 2014. The winning proposal will collaborate with the curators, engaging in all aspects of the project realization including design sessions, discussions of the projects’ amendments/adjustments, and technical investigations into the pavilions’ realization. 24” x 36” presentation board (landscape format), mounted on rigid board or foamcore, with the following images: plan, section, perspective of media room, narrative (maximum 500 words). Budget to include all estimated costs, included separately on 8 ½” x 11” paper. No indication of design team and/or designer name to appear on the board.

Registration deadline/ Submission deadline:
07. June 2014
